The Great Write-Off: ChatGPT vs Bard

The Future of Writing: ChatGPT vs Bard in a Battle of Words

KEY FACTS

Those who are interested in gaining access to Bard, which is currently only available in a limited number of markets in the United States and the United Kingdom, can sign up for the waitlist. Bard is an app that claims to assist users in planning birthday parties, understanding difficult topics, and creating a pros and cons list for a difficult decision.

Google has developed a stand-alone website for the chatbot called Bard in an effort to differentiate it from its widely used search engine. Bard is programmed to respond in a manner that is analogous to that of a human.

Bard is powered by Google’s Linguistic Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), which is a big learning model that the company says will keep getting better as new information is added over time.

OpenAI, which was funded by Microsoft, released ChatGPT in November 2022. ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that can respond to questions and handle particular difficulties, such as drafting a contract between an artist and producer. OpenAI is responsible for the development of ChatGPT.

From December 2022, when ChatGPT was first introduced, Google has been in a race to compete with OpenAI. In response to the introduction of ChatGPT, Google issued a “code red” warning.

KEY DIFFERENCES

Despite the fact that both OpenAI and Google agree that their chatbots aren’t perfect and occasionally say things that are erroneous or insulting, there are some significant differences between the two:

Coding: The capacity of ChatGPT to generate intricate code was one of the most notable features that contributed to the program’s rise to prominence. It can even debug code. According to a paper that the researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and University College London published on arXiv, they compared the chatbot to “standard automated program repair techniques” used in the industry as well as two common deep learning approaches.

They discovered that ChatGPT “is competitive to the common deep learning approaches” and produced “notably better” results than the standard program repair approaches. Yet, Google has indicated that Bard is “still learning programming,” which means that the feature is not yet ready.

Conversation Retention: OpenAI claims that ChatGPT is able to recall what was discussed in earlier conversations. Nevertheless, there are two important things to keep in mind: the bot can only remember up to 3,000 words (everything that is spoken after that is not kept), and it does not take into account previously had conversations when formulating its responses. Google has stated that Bard’s capacity to remember context is “purposefully limited for now,” but the company asserts that this capacity will increase over the course of time.

Replies: One of the most significant distinctions between the two is that Bard’s LaMDA is able to pull responses from the internet, which ensures that it will always have the most recent responses. When prompted, it can also provide direct links to web pages and is integrated into Google’s search engine. On the other hand, ChatGPT is powered by the Generative Pre-training Transformer-4 (GPT-4), which means that all of its responses are drawn from its knowledge base. However, the cutoff date for this knowledge base is September 2021, which means that it lacks access to more recent information and research.

Language: ChatGPT is fluent in a number of languages, including Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin, Italian, Japanese, and Korean; however, its proficiency in responding to questions and statements varies according to the language, and English is its dominant language. Bard is only available in the English language, and he can only communicate in that language.

Drafts: Bard generates multiple distinct iterations of each and every prompt (which it refers to as “drafts”), enabling users to select the most appropriate answer. According to comments made by Jack Krawczyk, a senior product director at Google, in an interview with MIT Technology Review, this was adopted because there is a “feeling of authoritativeness” when only one response is utilized. The sole response that ChatGPT provides to inquiries is only one.

SURPRISING FACT

Bard gave the wrong response to a question that was asked during a promotional video that was shown at Google’s pitch in February, which caused Alphabet, Google’s parent company, to lose $100 billion in market value.
