How I Learned to Mind my Own Business
In my early twenties, I was the epitome of a people-pleaser. I was always putting other people’s needs before my own and bending over backward to try to make everyone happy. I quickly learned that this was an impossible task and that it was taking a toll on my mental and physical health.
I decided to start making some changes and put myself first for once. One of the biggest changes I made was learning to mind my own business. I realized that I didn’t have to be involved in every little detail of other people’s lives. I could still be a good friend or family member without knowing everything about what was going on in their lives.
This change was difficult at first because old habits die hard, but it was so worth it in the end. Now, when someone starts to tell me about their latest drama, I politely excuse myself or change the subject. If they are really close to me and I can tell they need to vent, I’ll listen for a few minutes and then offer some words of advice or support.
But if it’s something that doesn’t concern me, I simply move on. This change has been so freeing for me! I no longer feel like I need to be responsible for everyone else’s happiness and well-being. And as a result, my own happiness and well-being have improved dramatically. If you have a habit of meddling in other people’s affairs, I encourage you to try minding your own business for a while.
